Spongey's Christmas Carol #8: Eight Crazy Nights

Hello, and welcome back to Spongey's christmas carol.

So, today I will be reviewing a very…interesting movie. For one thing, it’s a /Hanukah/ movie for the most part.

What’s the other interesting thing about it?

It’s an animated musical..

Starring adam sandler.

Adam Sandler is the butt of many a joke today. He’s known for making comedies that make tons of money, but get thrashed by critics. Some people feel his hatedom is a little bit much.

Of course, then they saw Jack and jill and they were on my side.

He CAN be funny, as shown in Click, Happy Gilmore, and other early films he’s done. But he still does crap like “Just go with it” and “Jack and Jill”. He’s talented and he can do good movies, so I don’t; get why he wastes his talent on these movies. He’s the writer on a lot of these, so you can’t blame him full time.

So in live action he’s loud and annoying. But how is he in cartoon form?

Let’s find out.

This, is Eight Crazy nights.

Adam San-…Davey is a 33-year-old alcoholic troublemaker with a long criminal record, Davey is about to be sentenced to jail time when Whitey Duvall (also Sandler), a 70-year-old volunteer referee from Davey's former basketball league, comes forward at his trial. The judge at Whitey's suggestion, sentences Davey to community service as a referee-in-training for Whitey's Youth Basketball League. Under the terms of the community service, if Davey commits a felony before his sentence is completed, he will be sentenced to at least ten years in prison.

So most of the movie is Davey being an asshole to his friends, and stuff like that. Soon we find out he has a tragic past, and whitey has to help Davey become nice and …not be an asshole.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

So...is this movie really good?

Not really.

Is this movie really bad?

…Not really.

It’s kind of hard to explain. First let’s talk about the bad stuff.

For the entire first half of this movie, I wanted to give up on it. It’s filled with annoying jokes, stuid humor and a really un-likeable main character. Davey is meant to be an asshole, but this goes way overboard. He’s mean to kids, he destroys public property, and he’s just an ass. Yes, that’s the point, but it goes overboard, as I said.

The good stuff? Well, the animation is pretty decent, The songs are actually pretty good, and contain the funnier moments in the film. And the character of whitey is…actually quite good. He does seem kind of annoying at first. But soon we start to connect with him, and he becomes the best character in the movie. He also becomes one of the leading causes of the heart of this movie.

Yes, you read that right. This movie has heart.

In the 2nd half, Davey starts to learn that he’s an asshole, and starts to shape up. We learn that his parents died on a otherwise great day, and …..that did not affect him well. Well this doesn’t completely excuse his asshole-ness, we at least understand some of it.

We also really connect to whitey at this point, as we found out people don’t really seem to like him, and really wants this one award thingy.,

Though there’s still some…interesting jokes, it does become semi-decent.

So do I recommend this movie?

Well, it depends. If you can stomach raunchy jokes, shit jokes, and most all, adam sandler. If you can stand some of that enough, then you can last to see the true heart of this movie.

Because of that first half, I really can’t like this movie as much as I want to. I have a lot of mixed feelings on it. It’s decent enough for me to enjoy it, and I did laugh a few times throughout it.

So, I guess it’s good enough to like.

GRADE: B-

(Oh by the way, Rob Schneider is the narrator)
