Spongey's Christmas Carol #7: RL Stine's The Haunting Hour

Hello, and welcome back to Spongey's christmas carol.

Okay, I swear to god this is the last RL Stine Christmas thing I have to review..

In 2010, Stine decided he wanted his genius in the small screen once again. The Goosebumps tv show was a big hit, and he thought it would be nice to do something like that again.

So thus, we got “Rl Stine’s The Haunting Hour”

This show is goosebumps if it was really good.

The show is fun, creepy, and has some decent acting at points. It’s one of the best shows on The Hub….besides you know what.

It’s named after Rl Stine’s short story collection called the haunting hour…..but the episodes are based on stories from The Nightmare hour, mostly. Even then, only a few eps so far are based on stories.

False advertising at it’s finest.

Anyway, like any good horror show, it has a Christmas episode!

This, is “A Creature was Stirring”

This one has a simple, but very interesting story.

Timmy’s family….kind of sucks. His siblings are assholes, and his parents argue a lot. Seriously, this is the unhappiest family ever. Later Timmy finds out that…his parents are planning on getting divorced.

Ouch.

So Timmy goes to open his present, hoping he got what he wanted. He opens it to find…

A gremlin,

There was a movie like this once. I think it was called…Troll.

Anyway, the gremlin causes havoc around the house, trapping the family in some room. They bond because of this, and actually grow stronger.

At the end, the gremlin SETS THE HOUSE ON FIRE, and they run away, homeless, but together.

We see the charred remains of Timmy’s Christmas llist, which only has one thing on it…he wished for his family to get back together.

Awwww.

But wait, where did the gremlin come from?

And then…Santa drives up the house…and picks up the gremlim. It came from santa.

Timmy wished for his family to get together. Santa sent him a monster to tear up his house so they will be forced to spend time, and grow stronger.

That magnificent bastard.

Santa is such a troll.

Final Thoughts:

Yea…I like this episode. It’s one of the best.

I like that there’s a likeable main character, even if he is a little kid, which is odd for a Rl stine show. The family dynamic is quite interesting, as you never see heavy subjects like divorce in a RL stine property. And of course the Christmas aspects work every well. How many horror episodes start with “We wish you a merry Christmas”? And of course, the monster is great. He is fairly creepy, and badass. It’s also kinda sweet when this family starts bonding due to the monster.

Oh, and the twist ending? I love it. I like it when santa is a troll sometimes. Sure, it’s a little silly, but the whole episode has that sort of fun factor to it. But unlike Goosebumps, you can take it seriously. It’s more high on fun then anything, but it’s still good

So overall, this is fun, sweet, and great Christmas episode for the haunting hour
